Bali: Ecstatic Dance & Vegan Ice Cream

by | Sep 20, 2018 | Dance, Food

Everyone who has read Eat Pray Love knows that Bali and especially Ubud is filled with yogi’s, Buddhists, free spirits and vegan lovers. Don’t get me wrong; it is not an insult. I have been around the local internationals for a while in Bali, and I can tell you, I’ve never felt so good. Everyone you will meet has the same goal in life: find inner peace, share the love for nature and the abilities of the human body & mind. Don’t let these free kind of characters stop you from going to Ubud because you have no idea what you’ll miss, like ecstatic dance en vegan ice cream.

It’s only crazy if you label it crazy

In our first week, we went to an ecstatic dance party. It was the first time for us to ever go to such an event. We love dancing, so why not try a different way of dancing for once? Ecstatic dance is dancing freely and do whatever you feel like doing. You can go breakdancing on every music genre, do some whipping your hair back and forth and wave your arms like you just don’t care on a hypnotising song. You will see ‘different’ stuff happening, but that’s the thing, it’s not crazy until you label it crazy.

Here it’s just a way of expressing yourself and have fun and freeing yourself from the daily life stress. We are from Holland, so as the whole world may know, we are kind of down to earth and direct in our approach, so in the beginning, we needed some time to adjust. But after a while, we started dancing ourselves, and we forgot that we’re Dutch.

Firedance is one of those arts you might see during an ecstatic dance party.

One big happy family

We were at a location in the middle of rice fields, with the lovely smell of wet grass and fire pits. Everybody was enjoying vegan ice cream from Kokolato* (best thing you will ever taste and not feel guilty afterwards) and dancing or swimming. When it started to get dark, everybody set down to look at a fire dancer and enjoy tasty food.

We have met people there who changed our whole way of looking at nature and people. I was impressed by their wisdom and happiness, but mostly I was impressed by the lovely way they treated each other. One big happy family. If you are interested in an experience like this, just visit a yoga class, and they will tell you where to go.

“When movement becomes ecstatic, then it is dance. When the movement is so total, there is no ego, then it is dance”

A little guilty healthy pleasure

Almost daily I went to this restaurant called little Buddha. They have the best organic food and for sweet prices. Instead of a plastic straw, you will get one of glass; this is just one of those innovative things to help improve sustainability.

Back to ice cream, I can’t stop talking about Kokolato. I want the whole world to know about it. Kokolato makes vegan ice cream in a way I’ve never tasted before. Kokolato is owned by an American fella who is an ice cream maker by day and a rapper by night. In his shop, we have done some karaoke with a group of strangers, just because we could. We had the time of our lives in his little store. So, the only man worth chasing this summer is this ice cream man.
